A Message of Hope Cancer Fund to Host 9th Annual Gala Fundraiser on Sat., May 14 at Gaithersburg Marriott

All-volunteer-run Non-profit Founded by Local Cancer Survivor Provides Monetary Assistance to Cancer Patients in Financial Need; Sponsorship Opportunities, VIP Tables Available for Event

A Message of Hope Cancer Fund, Inc. – an all-volunteer-run, local non-profit organization that provides direct monetary assistance to area cancer patients in financial need – will hold its 9th Annual Gala on Saturday, May 14, beginning at 7 p.m., at the Gaithersburg Marriott Hotel, 9751 Washingtonian Boulevard, Gaithersburg, Md.

The annual gala is A Message of Hope’s primary fundraiser of the year. This year’s theme is “Journey of Hope” and the event features an elegant dinner and program, an open bar, music and dancing until midnight, and a silent and live auction.

A Message of Hope was founded in 2008 by Meredith McNerney, a young cancer survivor who launched the fund when her family and friends helped her to organize the first gala, in celebration of her birthday and one year after she was diagnosed with Merkel Cell Carcinoma. Meredith and her husband were both public school teachers at the time and felt fortunate to have an excellent health insurance plan, but nevertheless learned quickly how household bills can pile up for anyone battling cancer, with expenses such as medical co-payments, prescriptions, travel to treatments, and lost time at work. Meredith was determined to turn her own ordeal into something positive and thus, with the initial help of friends and family, the foundation was launched.

Since its inception, A Message of Hope Cancer Fund – a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization – has raised more than $900,000 and provided much-needed financial assistance to approximately 300 cancer patients and families in Maryland and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

A Message of Hope Cancer Fund is currently seeking event sponsors for the gala and donated items for the silent and live auctions, as well as corporate or individual sponsors for reserved VIP tables and other exclusive event sponsorship opportunities. VIP tables are available for $1,750. For information on sponsorship opportunities or to purchase tables and individual seats for the gala, please visit www.amessageofhopecf.org.

In addition to the already burdensome costs of treating cancer, when a child or family member is critically ill, one parent may have to leave his or her job to care for them. This makes it difficult for families to cover expenses they previously did not have difficulty with, such as utility bills, rent or mortgage payments, rising gas costs, and other everyday expenses. MHCF offers families assistance with some of these costs.
