About A Message of Hope

Media Kit for download: MEDIA RESOURCES for A Message of HOPE Cancer Fund

A Message of Hope Cancer Fund, Inc. provides direct financial assistance to families who face the monetary burdens associated with cancer. We provide support with co-pays, prescription drugs, rent/mortgage, groceries, and gas to and from treatment. We work directly with social workers and nurse navigators who refer patients to us. We are unable to give a family an application without initial contact from someone in the medical profession.  We serve families in Southern Maryland (Charles and St. Mary's County).

We are most proud of the fact that we are an ALL-VOLUNTEER organization which has raised over $750,000 in less than six years. To date, we have helped over 150 families in the local area!

How does A Message of Hope Cancer Fund help? We provide interim support to patients in active cancer treatment.

  1. Interim support, defined as a time period of one month up to 12 months, is provided*. (*varies based on availability of funds)
  2. Current Treatment: A surgical procedure is scheduled or has occurred within six weeks of the application; currently undergoing chemotherapy, or radiation. Please note that complications from surgery, are not considered part of current treatment.
A Message of Hope Cancer Fund provides direct financial assistance for bills such as: mortgages payments, rent payments, utility payments, doctor visit co-pays, and prescription co-payments (for cancer drugs only). A Message of Hope Cancer Fund does not pay cable television, internet service, nor cell phone bills. A Message of Hope Cancer Fund will make direct payments to the recipient’s service providers. No funds are directed to the recipient themselves.
How do I apply for assistance?
Patients are referred by social workers, nurse navigators, or doctors in hospitals or offices where patients are treated. Individuals cannot apply without a medical professional’s referral.

  • You do NOT qualify if you are retired and receiving a monthly pension check from former employer.
  • You do NOT qualify if your utility bills are currently being paid through a local Low income Home Energy Assistance Program.

In addition to the already burdensome costs of treating cancer, when a child or family member is critically ill, one parent may have to leave his or her job to care for them. This makes it difficult for families to cover expenses they previously did not have difficulty with, such as utility bills, rent or mortgage payments, rising gas costs, and other everyday expenses. MHCF offers families assistance with some of these costs.
